Nerd role call.

Welcome to The Cheesecake Thickens! We’re so glad you’ve decided to check out this fledgling sister site of the New Authors’ Fellowship. If you want to know what we’re all about, simply click up there on the About Cheesecake button…but not until you finish reading this. Or maybe go read that then come back here. Doesn’t matter. Just read this please!

As a group, we decided that our first posts should be an introduction about ourselves. But not just any introduction…no. That wouldn’t do. We have bios already up there on the menu bar and we wanted to do something special. We want to tell you about who we REALLY are.

Ready?

I’m a huge nerd. There I said it. But not just any nerd…I’m a nerd on multiple levels. I’m like an onion of nerdness. I have layers. So here’s my nerd role call–a list of all my nerdy glory.

Obviously I’m a nerd about writing, hence why I’m a writer. But beyond the basics of that I’m a huge nerd over plot development…which will prove to be the downfall of one Diane M. Graham. (Stick around and you’ll hear all about a certain “bet” between us.) And I’m not just confessing this as “bragging” because of the bet…it really is true. I over analyze the plot of every book I read and every movie I watch. I break them down into their essential elements and assign each element to its appropriate plot device model. It’s an extension of my fascination with taking things apart to see how they work.

I’m a music nerd. I learned to read music at the same time I learned to read, and my first degree is in music education. I can play with reasonable proficiency, granted you give me a day or two to practice up, about fifteen instruments. I compose music every chance I get, and my Senior Recital featured five of my own compositions and me performing classical solo work on two different instruments. I can generally name the composer of a movie soundtrack within two or three guesses…but only if it’s one I don’t already have memorized, otherwise I’ll nail it within a few bars.

I’m a video game nerd. Don’t confuse me with a hard-core gamer. I’m just a nerd. I like Mario Kart, Metroid, and any of the Lego series. I grew up playing Atari and my parents still have my old NES, complete with Duck Hunt and “Mike Tyson’s” Punch-Out, not that sorry remake. I still remember the extra life codes for BOTH Contra games and I’ve beaten all the vintage Mega Man games. In my house you’ll find a Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Atari Flashback, and my computer sports both NES and SNES emulators. At my parents’ house there is a PS2 and the aforementioned NES. But I’m most nerdy about Zelda. If I could have my way, I’d own every single Zelda game ever made. I currently have seven Zelda games, including the emulator versions. For the Zelda literate I have: TLOZ, ALTTP, OOT, MM, TP, PHG, and SKYWARD SWORD! (I’m particularly excited about that one, right now because I got it for Christmas.) I want Wind Waker, but I’m content to wait a while. I also have six video game related t-shirts…two are Zelda.

I know the difference between Star Wars, Star Trek, and Firefly. If Captain Janeway was in charge of the Rebel Alliance, it would have been game over for the Empire in one movie. Mal out-smuggles Han all day long, and a movie featuring the Borg vs. Reevers would be most epic. As a side note, Reading Rainbow existed long before TNG.

I can tell you what movie was the first to have ALL its special effects (except for makeup and explosions) done by computer animation. Here’s some hints…1984, set in space, involves a video game. It’s just nerd goodness. Robynn Tolbert should figure this one out.

I love Tolkien. I have collector’s editions of LOTR, Simirillion, and the Hobbit. I have the extended edition DVDs…and I think I have the old cartoon somewhere. I have a crinkly old Middle Earth map and the LOTR edition of Trivial Pursuit. I’m also just a little afraid the world might actually end before I get a chance to watch the new Hobbit movie. A paper on the Simirillion I wrote in undergrad was published on theonering.com. One day I aspire to live in a Hobbit hole.

This is already running too long. What else? I still know how to operate in DOS. Power Rangers is just a rip-off of Voltron. The coolest of the X-Men is Shadowcat. Owning a DeLorean would be the best thing ever. Luna Lovegood is the most awesome character in the series. Dragons are pretty much my favorite animal. (Not that into Ligers.) MST3K was pure genius. I can recite the books of the Bible in less than 30 seconds. (Yes, all of them.) Dexter’s Laboratory was the original Phineas and Ferb. I HAVE THE POWER!

And Twilight is my favorite book…

…BAZINGA!

Oh…there’s so much more. But I think I’ve said enough for tonight. I realize I may have said some things you don’t get. I’m happy to explain. Just ask.

-k

Wow, and I thought i was a nerd! Is the 1984 film with all effects done using animation the one where a kid in a trailer park is enlisted for space combat after he plays a computer game? I won’t mention the name….

Love Firefly btw. and Serenity is one of my all time faourite films (watched it AGAIN last weekend).

    • Yup! You guessed the correct movie! I’ve recently had to revoke some nerd points from my wife because she named Picard, Levar Burton, and Data (saying with a short A sound) as the only TNG characters she knew. I told her she is now required to watch Firefly with me to get those points back.

      • P.A.Baines

Woohoo! Nerd points :-) . One thing I’ve always admired in Serenity is the first scene on the ship, used to introduce the crew. I only realised on the second or third viewing that it’s all one shot.

I may lose nerd points on some of these accounts, love, but I gain them back on soooo many others. *BAZINGA! :)

May the nerdiness be with you.

I guessed the movie, and I haven’t even seen it yet. Strange in both counts, I know.

We nerds are cool, despite what society says.

(This is looking like it’ll be a fun blog to follow)

  3. I think you and I would have an amazing time hanging out together. it’s so good to find someone who speaks your language and laughs at one liners — or movie/tv quotes — when everyone looks at you like “what’s so funny”?

    • Those kinds of friends are hard to come by. I’m still looking for a few good candidates…but that’s a topic for another blog post.

  4. I thought I was a pretty good nerd, until I read this. My little fantasy bubble has now been rudely popped. ;)

  5. Diane Graham

Zelda! We have had each version. I started the tradition long ago. My Daddy still has the music haunt his sleep. :D
I know the movie also. Great stuff.

I’m with Heather, I’m not quite the nerd I thought. I think you’d get along with my husband, though. I will say that I have played/owned a few of the Zeldas. Oh, and Firefly is one of my fav shows, and Star Wars and Serenity are def in my Top 10 movies (so is LoTR, though I’ve never been able to read the books, no matter how many times I try). :)

A confessional blog about how nerdy I am. I’ll be blogging on this website about once every two weeks. Be sure to subscribe, it promises to be a hoot!

No Doctor Who? My days of taking you seriously are definitely coming to a middle.
Which do you prefer: TOS, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise?

    • I’ve been thinking of getting into Doctor Who…I just haven’t had time to watch any of the episodes yet. TOS – cheesy.TNG – better, but a little heavy on the science. DSN – dumb. Ent – even dumber. Voyager kicks butt. TNG would be my 2nd choice.

      • Mary Unsworth

I’ll agree that Ent is dumb. But I must take up arms over DSN. How much have you seen?
I like Voyager (I own the entire series), but I feel that a lot of potential conflict is wasted, especially concerning the mixed crews, and that too many plot lines get recycled (if it’s so hard to get to the Delta quadrant, how does so much Alpha quadrant stuff end up there?).
Doctor Who is wonderfully cheesy. But somehow it has made me cry multiple times. I am the proud owner of a sonic screwdriver and a Doctor Who necklace?

        • I watched enough to know I didn’t like it. I remember TNG when it started and the excitement it caused…never missed an episode. But a Star Trek without a ship? Never worked for me. Voyager brought some serious action to the franchise that TNG didn’t always have. Sure some conflict may have been wasted, but the writers also never really had a chance to flesh out the show like they wanted. It was cut short and they had to jump to the finale quicker than they wanted.

          • Mary Unsworth

We’ll have to debate this more when we meet for filming. And I need to show you Duet.

  9. Just as well you said bazinga, or we would have had to have a serious talk…Proud to say I understand most of your items except for gaming. ;)

    • You’re missing out with Zelda. It’s not only a great game, it’s great story telling…except for the fact that Nintendo hasn’t really tried too hard to keep continuity between them. But Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are genius.

  10. mrsmusicnerd

    Bazinga! :P

I must admit to all of the above. My grandkids still come and play Zelda with me. I even had the 3-DO game system. I know my father went to his grave with Mario dinging in his brain. He came to stay with us near the end and the girls and I would be up half the night playing Mario.

  12. mibillie2

    P.S.
I love The Big Bang Theory (the t.v. show).

  13. I think Power Rangers are awesome, its my childhood show.

  14. Oh, and I’m with Mary on the superiority of Voyager and the Doctor. That kind of nerd, I certainly am. (Proof: http://bit.ly/xlj6Ss) …I just wish I had more time for them.
